948 “Wheat Penny,” also known as a Lincoln Cent with a wheat reverse design, is composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc. This composition was standard for pennies from 1944 onwards, after a brief period during World War II where pennies were made of zinc-coated steel due to copper shortages.
